The retired president of Tanzania Mzee Ali Hassan Mwinyi will lead about 5000 people on this year Dar Rotary Marathon under the theme ‘Help Children Fight Cancer’.

The marathon will be held on Sunday October 14,2012 and it is aimed to collect over Tsh 500mil to complete the outfitting of the new children’s cancer ward with hospital beds, oxygen and medical gas distribution, medical equipment, fresh water well and school facilities for children under long term treatment of cancer.

Speaking in a press breafing today the board chairperson of Rotary Dar Marathon Sharmila Bhatt, said the collection from the fund rising will go direct to complete the children cancer ward which were started on the last year’s marathon.

“The end result of this marathon will be fully functioning and well equipped Children’s Cancer Ward, the best in sub Saharan Africa,” confidently said Bhatt.

Either, the organizing committee chair Zainul Dossa said the committee has prepared the grounds for holding one of the best marathons ever Dar es Salaam has witnessed so far.

“Regarding participation in the marathon the event is expected to attract 5,000 particupants and it includes the 9km walk and a 21.1 half marathon. Both the run and walk will start and end at the Police Officers Mess in Masaki with the run starting at 6:00 am and the walk at 7:00 am.

“The marathon will pass through some major roads in the city including the Toure Drive, Chole Road, Haile Sellasie, Ali Hassan mwinyi, Ocean, Kivukoni, Ohio and Kenyatta drive all the way to Police Officers Mess from the base. While the walk will take a shorter route and will not come to the city centre like the marathon,” said Dossa.

However, while commenting about the partnership of Bank M in the marathon, director of communication from Bank M Johnson Mshana said the Bank is always dedicated to support the community based projects and it has working together with Rotary in this noble cause since the introduction of the marathon in 2009.

On the other hand, the completion of the ward will cost Tsh 750mil and for outfitting the ward with all the medical equipment will be a further 500mil making a total contribution of over Tsh 1.3bil. That is why Rotary call upon all companies, organizations and individuals to come forward and join this noble cause.

Tanzania has 40 Rotary clubs while Dar es Salaam has 6 which are the core clubs which initiate and spearhead the Dar marathon since 2009 and now it will mark the forth year in a row, don’t be left out be part of the team to put smile on the Children’s faces who are living with cancer.
